melted

the art project: abgeschmolzen, 37 gletscheransichten, 2002-2004, arose from my constant preoccupation with glaciers and my desire to draw attention to their increasingly rapid melting. they are mainly small-format views of glaciers seen from space. 25 € of the sales price will be donated to the glacier archive of the society for ecological research, munich. these works were shown in 2004 at the alpin museum munich and in 2008 at the alpin museum kempten together with the exhibition glaciers in the greenhouse (gletscher im treibhaus). in this exhibition, sylvia hamberger and wolfgang zängl juxtapose old photographs, some of which were taken almost a hundred years ago, with photographs from the years 2000 to 2007. these image comparisons vividly illustrate glacier retreat. in the record-breaking summer of 2003 alone, the “eternal ice” of the alps lost up to ten percent of its volume.
